Memories

I remember going to Farmington for a visit and during the time it was Mama's 36th birthday. Aunt Helen, Aunt Edith (I think), Bonnie, Kay, Gloria made Mom several ceramic things and painted them. I remember the Ceramic fish and the Kitchen saying hanging in our house. Anyway I remember looking at Mom and thinking how beautiful she was and that 36 must be the perfect age to be!

I really worked at Indian wrestling in 7th grade as we were doing it in PE to see who was best. I won from our class and then I remember Dad having me wrestle Uncle Bert and Uncle Raymond and I beat them. (Who knows, they may have just let me, but I don't think so!) I remember how tickled it made Daddy.

I remember always things like watching Grandma and Grandpa Culler and Aunt Ella and Aunt Cora acting out plays at the old church in Romeo, riding Nick to my hearts content, milking cows in the dark, herding sheep, riding pigs, riding Nicker in the parades and rodeo, band, and all sorts of things. We may have worked hard sometimes but we surely had a lot of fun growing up. We indeed came from goodly parents and an extended family that loved us.

I remember once Margaret Large and I got in a fight at the water fountain, I think we were in the fifth grade. Mr. Cordova, the Principal called us both in for a spanking - yes they used to do that! I took my 3 swats like a man! No tears, no pleading for mercy! Then he told me to go back to class. I stood outside the door to ease drop on Margaret getting hers. She cried and tried to get away from him and ended up getting 10 swats!! I thought that was great and I got away and back into class without getting caught! I only got called into the office for fighting once and it was that dumb girl fight!

Usually fought the boys if anyone - had to keep them in line. I am making myself sound tough but really I was probably only in 5 or 6 real fights. The best thing was that after I got lucky in the first couple I had a "reputation" and nobody bothered me. I remember Tony Archuleta lined up a fight for me with a kid who was a year or so younger than I but who was really tough. He told him Peggy could beat him and so the kid took the challenge. All I did was put up my dukes and start walking toward him. He kept backing up until he came to the edge of the school yard then he turned and ran home! I was thankful for the reputation that time as he could have 'cleaned my clock'.
