Memories

When we were really small we had a little neighbor friend who couldn't pronounce Frankie. So she called him Tankie. She would come over and ask if she could play with Bonnie and Tankie. I thought that was funny.

When I was five years old the school house burned down. I watched it burn and I cried 'cause I was supposed to start kindergarten that year and I thought I wouldn't get to go. Anyway, the heat from the fire melted the lock on the safe and they couldn't get it open. It was a tall safe, kind of like a vault. They sent it to dad and he used a torch and opened it. Some of the papers etc were burned a little from the heat. Then dad cut the door out of the vault and made a sandbox for us out of the vault part. It was great fun!

Dad once bought a hearse and painted it green. I thought it was great fun and I liked to play in it and pretend I was driving. I don't know why, but I always drove to California. Grandpa Culler refused to ride in it. He said he would not ride in a hearse!

One day Frankie and I were in the barnyard and dad had a bunch of sheep. For some reason the sheep started chasing us. We ran really fast and hid in the old granary. As soon as got in there we saw a whole bunch of mice! It was a tough choice, sheep or mice!? I don't remember what we did, and it wasn't fun at the moment, but it's kind of funny to remember.

Mom usually kept a "stash" of candy bars for Dad. No one got in this "stash" even though we all knew it existed and where it was. One day, for some reason or other, I was home alone. I was cleaning out the frig and kept thinking how good one of those candy bars would be. Finally, I ran out of excuses to give myself as to why I shouldn't get one;; so I went to the cupboard where they were. I remember how good the candy looked and smelled so I took one and ate it. I really am not very good at stealing items and I just threw the wrapper in the garbage. Mom found the wrapper when she got home and called me into the kitchen. She asked if I had taken a candy bar and when I readily admitted it, she said, "If you had asked, I would have given you one. There was no reason to take one." That was all that was said to me, Mom never brought up the subject in front of my siblings. (I dreaded that she'd tell on me). Mom took care of the situation her way and even though this happened a long time ago; I can still see and hear her. I'd like to think I learned a good lesson that day.
